Learning to Drive in an Automatic Car

AUTOMATIC LESSONS

Why more learners are choosing automatic

In an automatic car there is no clutch pedal and no gear stick to work. The car changes gear for you, so you can put your attention where it matters: the road, the mirrors and the traffic around you.

That makes the early lessons calmer. You are not worrying about stalling at a junction or rolling back on a hill, which is a real help on Edinburgh’s busy roundabouts and steep streets. Every Learn With AutoDrive lesson is in an automatic car, taught by a DVSA-approved instructor.

What an automatic licence covers

If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence lets you drive automatic cars only. To drive a manual later, you would need to pass another test in a manual car.

For many drivers that is no drawback. All fully electric cars are automatic, and so are most hybrids, so an automatic licence fits the cars more and more people are buying.
