Edinburgh has two DVSA practical driving test centres: Currie, on the south-west side of the city, and Musselburgh, to the east. You choose your centre when you book your test on GOV.UK. Most learners pick the one closest to where they have been having lessons, so the roads feel familiar.
Address: 13-15 Bryce Road, Currie, Edinburgh EH14 5LT
Currie is the natural choice if you live or learn in the west and south-west of the city, including Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green, Colinton, Wester Hailes, Sighthill and Corstorphine.
Address: Newhailes Industrial Estate, Newhailes Road, Musselburgh EH21 6SJ
Musselburgh is usually more convenient for learners in the east of the city and the Lothians, including Portobello, Joppa, Duddingston, Musselburgh, Wallyford, Whitecraig, Dalkeith and Danderhall.
The car driving test lasts around 40 minutes and follows the same format at every centre:
You pass if you make no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 driving faults. Bring your provisional licence with you.
You must pass your theory test before you can book the practical test. Book both through GOV.UK only; unofficial sites often charge extra. The theory test costs £23. The practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays (DVSA fees, correct in October 2026).
Your instructor will tell you honestly when you are driving at test standard, and your lessons take place on real Edinburgh roads, so junctions, roundabouts and traffic conditions are familiar by test day. If your test is coming up soon, an intensive course can get you ready in time.
