Lessons and booking
How many lessons will I need? This depends on your experience and ability. Complete beginners typically need around 40 hours of tuition. We assess you in your first lesson and give honest advice. Our guide on how many driving lessons you need explains what affects the number.
Do you offer automatic lessons? Yes, all our lessons are conducted in automatic vehicles making it easier and less stressful to learn.
How long is each lesson? Pay-as-you-go lessons are booked as 2-hour sessions. Two hours gives you time to get to suitable roads, practise a skill properly and go over how it went before you finish.
Where do lessons take place? We cover Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, starting from Forrester Park Gardens, EH12 9AB. See the full list of areas we cover.
Do you pick me up from home? Yes. Pick-up and drop-off are included, so your lesson can start from home, work, school or college anywhere in the areas we cover.
How do I book a lesson? You can call us, send a WhatsApp message, or use the contact form on our website.
What if I need to cancel? Please give at least 48 hours notice to avoid being charged for the lesson.
Do you teach nervous drivers? Yes. Our lessons are calm and structured, and you set the pace. Find out more about lessons for nervous drivers.
Do you offer refresher lessons? Yes. If you have a licence but have not driven for a while, our refresher driving lessons will rebuild your confidence.

Learning in an automatic
Can I drive a manual car with an automatic licence? No. If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence covers automatic cars only. Read more about learning to drive in an automatic.
Is the driving test different in an automatic? No. The test follows the same format and is marked to the same standard whether you take it in an automatic or a manual car. The only difference is the licence you receive when you pass.
Are electric and hybrid cars covered by an automatic licence? Yes. All fully electric cars are automatic, and so are most hybrids, so an automatic licence covers them.
Can I switch from manual lessons to automatic? Yes. What you have already learned about observation, road position and junctions carries over. We assess your driving in the first lesson and carry on from where you are. Our guide to automatic or manual lessons compares the two.
Before you start
What do I need before my first lesson? A provisional driving licence. You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old and drive a car from 17. You also need to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, with glasses or contact lenses if you wear them.
Do I need to pass my theory test before I start lessons? No. You can start lessons as soon as you have your provisional licence. You do need a theory test pass before you can book the practical test, and the pass certificate is valid for two years.
Can I practise in a family car between lessons? Yes, as long as you are insured to drive it, the car shows L plates and you are supervised by someone aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for at least three years. If you are learning in an automatic, practise in an automatic.
Tests and prices
Which test centre will I use? Edinburgh has two practical test centres, Currie and Musselburgh, and you choose one when you book. See our guide to the Edinburgh driving test centres.
What happens on the practical driving test? The test lasts about 40 minutes. It begins with an eyesight check and two vehicle safety questions, followed by general driving, one reversing manoeuvre and about 20 minutes of independent driving following a sat nav or road signs. How much do lessons cost? Pay-as-you-go lessons are £90 for 2 hours. A 10-hour refresher course is £420 and a 40-hour beginner course is £1,650. See our driving lesson prices.
